CONFERENRENCE ON THE LEGACY OF HUGO CHAVEZ HELD IN LONDON
Tuesday, April 30, 2013

A conference was held in London under the title “The Legacy of Hugo Chavez. An alternative for the 21st Century”. The presentation was organized by the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign and was attended by over 100 persons. Important personalities from British politics and culture and Latin America participated in different panels to commend the works and the intellectual legacy of Chavez. The Commercial Counselor of the Cuban Embassy, Carlos Alfaro participated in the panel “Overcoming the legacy of slavery and colonialism in Venezuela. The struggle against racism and the support for social development in the Caribbean”.

During his presentation the Cuban diplomat highlighted the priority given by President Chavez to social issues in his political thinking as well as in his work. An example of this is the implementation of social programs aimed at assisting the low income population and those neglected for decades. The fact that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was declared an illiteracy free country by UNESCO is proof of this. Likewise the programs to improve the health and living conditions of the least favored communities where in most cases aboriginal and persons of African descent make the bulk of the population; it is an example of the struggle waged by Venezuela in the field of social justice. Cuba has contributed and will continue to these social programs which propose is to improve the standards of living of the Venezuelan people, just as Cuba has done it in the rest of the Caribbean, Africa and other Latin American countries.

PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENTS SUPPORT RESULTS IN VENEZUELAN ELECTIONS
Monday, April 22, 2013

Summoned y progressive Latin American movements in the United Kingdom, among them Cubans in solidarity with Venezuela stood in vigil in front of the Embassy of Venezuela in London to defend it against the anti-Chavez groups opposed to acknowledge Nicolas Maduro´s victory.
The demonstration was held as a response to mobilizations orchestrated by supporters of the defeated opposition candidate Henrique Capriles who besieged the Venezuelan consulate in London on the 16th of April by harassing its staff and blocking their exit.
That day about 80 supporters of the Bolivarian Revolution managed to arrive to the consulate and with bravery made resistance to the aggressive frustration of the Venezuelan right residing in the city (about 400 persons) shouting anti.chavez slogans. Furious by the solidarity and the Latin American flags the rightists turned their backs and went away until the only slogans heard were those of solidarity with the Venezuelan Revolution.
With songs, music and dancing the progressive activists ended the demonstration willing and ready to defend the sovereignty of Venezuela and the legacy of Commander Hugo Chavez.
