PRESS RELEASE

UN Special Committee on Decolonization adopts important Resolution on the colonial question of Puerto Rico. June 19, 2012.

Last Monday, 18 June, the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization adopted by consensus a new important resolution on the colonial question of Puerto Rico, which was introduced by Cuba and co-sponsored by the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

In 13 consecutive years, 30 resolutions or decisions on this issue have been adopted by consensus in the Committee. Each and every one of them has reaffirmed the inalienable right of the Puerto Rican people to self-determination and independence, in accordance with UN General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV). However, little progress has been made towards a definitive solution to this colonial situation.

The resolution adopted this year takes note of the Special Communiqué on Puerto Rico adopted last February in Caracas, Venezuela, by the Heads of State and Government of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), as well as of important statements on the question of Puerto Rico issued in relevant meetings of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, such as the Final Document of the 2009 Summit, and the recently concluded Ministerial Meeting of the NAM Coordinating Bureau.

The resolution calls again upon the US President to release the three political prisoners serving sentences in US prisons, one of them has been imprisoned for 31 years; and reiterates the request for the United Nations General Assembly to comprehensively review the question of Puerto Rico in all its aspects.

The Puerto Rican people remain unable to exercise their legitimate right to genuine self-determination. The United States of America, the colonial power, maintain their economic, political, and social domination over this brotherly Latin American and Caribbean people, whose culture, identity and national sentiment have not been taken away, despite 114 years of colonial domination.

The Delegation of Cuba reiterated the strict support of the Cuban people, to the struggle of the brotherly people of Puerto Rico, for their full independence.
