Press Release. Cuba reaffirms its position to struggle for disarmament.
New York, 8 October .- In a statement delivered on 8 October at the General Debate of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Deputy Permanent Representative Oscar León reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to fight in favor of disarmament, particularly nuclear disarmament.
The Ambassador stressed the importance of the celebration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons last 26 September, for the first time in the history of the United Nations.
In his speech, the Cuban diplomat pointed out the need to begin as soon as possible the negotiations of a comprehensive Convention on nuclear weapons, as well as Cuba’s commitment to work on the convening of a High-Level International Conference by 2018 at the very latest for the same purposes.
The representative of the biggest Island of Antilles ratified the pride of belonging to the first densely populated area of the World declared as Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zone and, more recently, as Zone of Peace in order to banish forever the use or threat to use force in the region.
