Press Release. Cuba stresses the responsibility of the United Nations to prevent Conflicts, at the Security Council Open Debate
New York, 21 August.- In a speech delivered otoday at the UN Security Council, the Cuban Ambassador, Rodolfo Reyes Rodriguez, reaffirmed the responsibility of the United Nations to prevent conflicts.
The Ambassador stressed that only the respect for the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and International Law would enable the prevention of many conflicts.
The Cuban diplomat highlighted that the repeated causes of many conflicts turn out to be the interest of hegemonic and imperialistic domination, acts of aggression, struggle for the seizure of natural resources, remaining colonialist and neocolonialist strategies and practices, the current, unjust and excluding international order, unequal exchange, discrimination, xenophobia and interventionism.
In his speech, the Cuban representative underscored that solidarity, cooperation and international assistance, as well as joint action to eliminate poverty, unemployment, hunger, inequalities and the underlying causes thereof are necessary to prevent conflicts.
In like manner, the Ambassador pointed out that the Security Council should play its relevant role in defense of international peace and security, and fail to misappropriate the role granted in the Charter to other main organs of the Organization, particularly that of the General Assembly.
To end with, the Cuban Ambassador rejected the recent plan financed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which is contrary to the exercise of the right to self-determination and sovereignty of the Cuban people.
