Cuba reaffirms its firm position in support of the prohibition and elimination of all weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons at the UN Security Council. New York, May 7, 2014
In a statement delivered on May 7 at the UN Security Council, the Cuban Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez reaffirmed that the only guarantee for the non-proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons is their prohibition and complete elimination. He also reiterated that Cuba has not and has no intention of possessing weapons of mass destruction whatsoever.
The Ambassador stressed that Cuba rejects manipulation or arbitrary interpretation of Resolution 1540 by some Members of the Security Council against certain Countries, to the detriment of international treaties and legal obligations undertaken at specialized international forums in the field of disarmament.
The Cuban diplomat ratified Cuba’s profound rejection of all terrorist acts, methods and practices in all forms and manifestations by whomever, against whomever and wherever committed. In like manner, he condemned all acts aimed at encouraging, support, finance or cover up any terrorist act, method or practice.
The Ambassador concluded his statement by extending an invitation to celebrate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, next September 26.
