Press Release . UN General Assembly Interactive Dialogue to commemorate International Mother Earth Day
New York, 22 April. Cuba made a statement on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) at the Interactive Dialogue of the UN General Assembly to commemorate International Mother Earth Day.
In the speech, Ambassador Oscar León, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, expressed CELAC’s concern about the documented deterioration of the environment, the increased frequency and seriousness of natural disasters and the proved negative effects of human activities in nature, speeding up climate cycles.
In that regard, the Cuban diplomat referred to work carried out by CELAC in order to systemize and give priority to the needs so as to achieve a better quality of life for human beings in harmony and respect for Nature and its life cycle, thus guiding the region towards sustainable development.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 22 April as International Mother Earth Day under resolution A/RES/63/278 of 2009. Since then, the United Nations commemorate the date with a set of activities that includes conducting interactive dialogues to debate alternative development models that takes into consideration the protection to Nature and to its life cycles.
