Declaration on Peace and Nuclear Disarmament by the Commission on International Relations of the National Assembly of Peoples’ Power of the Republic of Cuba
The Commission on International Relations of the National Assembly of Peoples’ Power, aware that nuclear weapons and climate change are the most important challenges facing mankind today expresses its deep concern in the face of the existence of more than 22 600 nuclear warheads, half of which is ready to be used immediately.
Condemns the lack of political will of nuclear powers, which have not honored the commitment to reach an agreement to eliminate nuclear weapons and continue to improve the existing nuclear weaponry.
Rejects the alarming increase in military expenditures, which currently amounts to 1,5 billion of dollars, an amount that is several times over the resources allocated for the international development assistance. With the resources currently spent on weapons, over 1 020 million of hungry people existing on the planet could be fed, the death of 11 million children who die from starvation and preventable diseases every year could be avoided, the extreme poverty suffered by 1400 million people in the world could be fought or 759 million adults, who are still illiterate, could be taught to read and write.
Reaffirms the position repeatedly stated by Cuba at the highest level on the necessity to totally eliminate nuclear weapons and supports the Declaration on this issue adopted by the XVI NAM Ministerial Conference, which took place in Bali, Indonesia, on May 2011, calling for an international high-level conference to reach an agreement on a program for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
As Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz has repeatedly alerted, mankind is at a pivotal moment in its history. Threats to the survival of our species are becoming more serious and alarming. The only guarantee that nuclear weapons can not be used by States or anyone will be their total elimination and prohibition.
The Commission on International Relations of the National Assembly of Peoples’ Power calls upon all the world's parliaments to promote concrete steps leading to the complete elimination of nuclear arsenals, which would allow to secure for future generations an existence in a world of peace and free from nuclear weapons.
