New York, 13 April 2016. “Cuba has achieved demographic, educational and health indicators similar and, in some cases, higher than those of developed countries despite the economic, commercial and financial US blockade imposed on our country for more than half a century and the difficulties it has brought about”, stated today Mr. Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga, representative of Cuba to the 49th session of the UN Commission of Population and Development and Director of the Center of Population and Development Studies of the National Information and Statistics Office and the National Population and Housing Census.

Within this forum, the Cuban representative described the implementation of economic and social policies by the Cuban Government aimed at guaranteeing citizens’ wellbeing, full employment and social protection, equal distribution of economic outcomes and basic needs coverage.

While calling upon States’ political commitment, as key element to the full enjoyment of people’s rights and leading role within society, he highlighted that Cuba will keep national efforts to share its successful experiences with other countries, throughout cooperation and solidarity programs.

New York, 5 April 2016. During the opening session of the UN Disarmament Commission, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, called upon the irreversible, transparent and verifiable elimination and prohibition of nuclear weapons. Hence, she urged nuclear-weapon States to promptly advance in the accomplishment of their commitments for the total elimination of their nuclear arsenals in order to reach the priority goal of nuclear disarmament.

After opposing the streamlining and modernization of the existent nuclear weapons and the development of new sorts, for being inconsistent with nuclear disarmament obligations, the Cuban diplomat highlighted the honor and pride of the Cuban people and Government not only for belonging to the first nuclear-weapon-free densely populated area but also to one in Latin America and the Caribbean which has been declared ‘Zone of Peace’.

 New York, 29 March 2016. “The Cuban people is very proud of its African roots, which are present in our idiosyncrasy and our cultural manifestations”, pointed out Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, while referring to the identity of the Cuban nation within the framework of the Commemorative meeting on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, celebrated today at the UN headquarters.

Within this forum, the Ambassador condemned the most serious crimes committed against humanity with the transatlantic slave trade, at the time she highlighted Cuba’s contributions to Africa’s emancipation: “….a continent all humanity will always be indebted to”.

(15 Marzo/2016) Cuba in the achievement of a global commitment for gender equality and women empowerment.

New York, 15 March 2016. “The US blockade continues to be an obstacle for the full development of the country and the advancement of women; it is a direct and indirect form of violence impacting and hindering the enjoyment of the fundamental rights of Cuban women, including their right to development”, declared the Secretary-General of the Federation of Cuban Women and Member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, comrade Teresa Amarelle Boué, at the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) .

In this scenario, the Cuban official, described with updated figures the achievements of Cuba in terms of gender equality and women empowerment and called for the right of human beings to have a dignified life and a world where women not only benefit from development,  but they also enjoy having a leading role.
