(20 April/2016) Cuba reiterates its absolute commitment to achieving societies free of illicit drugs.

New York, 20 April 2016. “The scourge of drugs extends to all geographic regions, and generates and reproduces cycles of poverty, violence, various criminal behaviors, social exclusion and delicate health situations”, pointed out the Cuban Minister of Justice, H.E. Mrs. Maria Esther Reus Gonzáles at the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on the World Drug Problem, at the time she noted that there are experiences proving that an effective battle against drugs is possible when comprehensive, preventive and educational policies are developed, implemented and conducted by the State.   

Before this forum, the Minister highlighted that the Cuban Revolution, without plenty of resources and under a fierce economic, commercial and financial blockade, has been successful in countering drugs due to the firm political will of its government and the support of its people.

The Cuban Minister concluded by reiterating Cuba’s absolute commitment to achieving societies free of illicit drugs, a vital element to achieve sustainable development and the welfare of our peoples.

New York, 18 April 2016. “It is not morally permissible that the Security Council continues to evade the responsibility entrusted to it by the UN Charter for the maintenance of international peace and security, as regards this conflict”, highlighted today Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, within the framework of the UN Security Council, when firmly criticizing the impossibility of this Organ to adopt any resolution demanding Israel to put an end to its aggressive policies and colonizing practices against the Palestinian people, in flagrant and deliberate violation of International Law and International Humanitarian Law.

 In this line, the Cuban diplomat demanded full UN membership for Palestine, the cease of violations of Syria’s sovereignty, as well as, the promotion by the Council of a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the conflicts in the Middle East, which decisively contributes to guaranteeing progress and wellbeing of all the peoples in the region.

New York, 14 April 2016. “Population dynamics is a global responsibility, as it brings along changes that impact beyond national frontiers. The challenge of eliminating poverty and promoting sustainable development in 2030, guaranteeing at the same time environmental sustainability, is closely related to population patterns and tendencies”, stated today the Director of the Center of Population and Development Studies of the National Information and Statistics Office and the National Population and Housing Census, Mr. Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga, within the framework of the 49th session of the UN Commission of Population and Development.

In this forum, the representative of Cuba noted the importance of life-long strengthening of the human capital with particular approach to health and, sexual and reproductive rights; education, including comprehensive sexual education, as well as, rights, non-discrimination, equal opportunities, empowerment of women and youth participation. He highlighted that the Cuban State, in order to reach sustainable development in the coming 15 years, takes care of the challenges imposed by population ageing as a main demographic challenge, in line with the aim of constructing prosperous and sustainable socialism which includes, among other actions, the increase of fecundity and the improvement of conditions and quality of life for the elderly.
