(26 Abril/2016) Cuba promotes a new world information and communication order.

New York, 26 April 2016. As part of the General Debate of the 38th session of the UN Committee on Information, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal emphasized the importance of ensuring that the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) fully meets the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, International Law, in particular the sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and the internationally-recognized rules of coexistence among States. 

While expressing the firm rejection and concern of Cuba for the covert and illegal use of other nations’ information systems to attack third countries, the diplomat reiterated the identification and commitment of Cuba with the works of the Committee in achieving true global awareness of the need for a world of peace and security, development and respect of human rights.

(26 Abril/2016) Chernobyl: An example of Cuba’s humanitarian and internationalist policy.

New York, 26 April 2016. “Cuba does not offer what it has in excess; it rather shares what it has”, highlighted today the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, at the UNGA Special Commemorative Meeting in Observance of the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe affecting areas of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The Ambassador recalled that Cuba was one of the first States to respond to the request for international assistance, throughout a mass and free comprehensive health care program aimed at providing the children affected, by the Chernobyl accident, with medical treatment in Cuba. Such program embraced over 25 395 affected people from various countries including more than 21 340 children mostly from Ukraine.

22 April/2016 Cuba signs Paris Agreement and keeps its commitment to face climate change.

New York, 22 April 2016. With an approach of confidence in the efforts made so far to reach new international commitments aimed at stopping and facing climate change, the Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Mrs. Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya spoke today, in Cuba’s name, as part of the Special Signature Ceremony of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. 

In this context, the Minister announced that Cuba decides to sign the Paris Agreement and hopes that it comes into force in the near future, so that it really contributes to globally reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She made sure that Cuba will continue to firmly work and cooperate in the joint struggle to face climate change and construct a cleaner and more just world.

(21 April/2016) Cuba calls for world peace and development

New York, 21 April 2016. “There can be neither peace without development, nor development without peace. We need, without further delay, a just and equitable international system of economic relations that eradicates inequalities among and within countries, and removes the deep gaps separating developing states from developed ones”, stressed the Cuban Minister of Justice, H.E. María Esther Reus González, before the UN General Assembly at the High-Level Debate on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.  

In this sense, the Minister noted that Industrialized countries should accept their historical debt and exercise the principle of «common but differentiated responsibilities » and highlighted that Cuba prepares to contribute to the overall compliance of 2030 Agenda, throughout a national mechanism coordinating the work of national institutions, the civil society and the Cuban academy, in order to implement the goals and targets agreed upon by our leaders at the September Summit.
