New York, 31 August 2016. During the UN session marking the observance of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, Cuba highlighted that the mere existence of nuclear weapons poses a serious threat on international peace and security and on the survival of the human species in the planet. It also defined as unjustifiable and unacceptable the current world’s increasing expenditures in the development and testing of nuclear weapons and less in the promotion of life and development.
In her statement the delegate of Cuba, Lilianne Sánchez Rodríguez considered the total elimination and prohibition of nuclear weapons, as the only guarantee to avoid its use or threat of use by States or individuals, and called upon the momentum set by the Open-ended Working Group taking forward nuclear disarmament negotiations in Geneva, to initiate as soon as possible negotiations for a comprehensive convention on nuclear disarmament.
Likewise, the Cuban diplomat encouraged all States to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons next 26 September, and increase public awareness and knowledge on what these represent for humankind, as well as the need for their total elimination.
