(15 Marzo/2016) Cuba in the achievement of a global commitment for gender equality and women empowerment.

New York, 15 March 2016. “The US blockade continues to be an obstacle for the full development of the country and the advancement of women; it is a direct and indirect form of violence impacting and hindering the enjoyment of the fundamental rights of Cuban women, including their right to development”, declared the Secretary-General of the Federation of Cuban Women and Member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, comrade Teresa Amarelle Boué, at the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) .

In this scenario, the Cuban official, described with updated figures the achievements of Cuba in terms of gender equality and women empowerment and called for the right of human beings to have a dignified life and a world where women not only benefit from development,  but they also enjoy having a leading role.

Cuban Ambassador champions the full respect for the purposes and principles of the Charter

During the Open Debate  held by the United Nations Security Council on item: “Respect for the Principles and Purposes of the United Nations Charter as a Key Element for the Maintenance of International Peace and Security”, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez, stressed the need for the full respect for the sovereign equality of States, the peaceful settlement of international disputes, political independence and the political, economic, social and cultural system that nations have freely chosen for themselves and rejection of the threat or use of force against other State.

Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba reiterated Cuba’s willingness to fight terrorism.

During the debate held at the plenary of the United Nations General Assembly on the Secretary General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, the Cuban Deputy Permanent Representative to this Organization, Ana Silvia Rodriguez Abascal, affirmed that the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy is a milestone in the international struggle against this scourge and stressed the central role of the General Assembly in these endeavors. In like manner, she reiterated the unwavering willingness of Cuba in the struggle against terrorism and “the deepest rejection of and condemnation to all acts, methods and practices of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations by whomever, against whomever and wherever committed, regardless of whatever motivation there might be, including those in which States are directly or indirectly involved.”

Carlos Fidel Martín Rodríguez, Official from the International Economic Organizations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment of the Republic of Cuba, who takes part in these meetings in his capacity as Member of the Board, at the opening session stressed the efforts the country is already undertaking to include and harmonize 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals in the National Development Programmes, which grant priority and focus on the interests of children.

“The Geneva Declaration of principles recognized that building an Information Society requires new forms of solidarity, partnership and cooperation among governments and further stakeholders. In this endeavor, the international community can always count on Cuba’s sincere voice against injustice, inequality, underdevelopment, discrimination and manipulation; and for the establishment of a more equitable and just international order which really focuses on the human being, their dignity and well-being”, declared today the Cuban Vice-Minister of Communications, Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella, Head of the Cuban Delegation to the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on the World Summit of the Information Society (WSIS) being held from 14-16 December, 2015.

In his statement, the Cuban Vice-Minister highlighted that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has recognized the importance of ICTs, including Internet, as tools to promote peace, welfare, knowledge and human development. On behalf of Cuba, he called upon all States to work together so that the Internet be a zone of peace and prosperity, and that these issues be broadly discussed within the framework of the United Nations.

New York, 17 November, 2015. “We advocate that the Universal Periodic Review is granted the recognition and importance it deserves as the only existing universal mechanism for the comprehensive analysis of the human rights situation in all countries”, the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, Vilma Thomas, declared before the Third Committee, at the time she regretted that the report of the Human Rights Council presented continues to reflect a trend towards the use of punitive approaches and selective treatment when considering the various human rights situations. She also called upon the analysis of the impact of imposed unilateral coercive measures on the protection of human rights, latent in the detrimental impact on Cuba of the blockade policy in place for more than 50 years.

Before this forum, the diplomat ratified Cuba’s commitment to the promotion of and respect for all human rights for all, reflected in its will to continue working in the promotion of the rights of the peoples to self-determination, peace and development; for the realization of their rights to food, the establishment of a democratic and equitable international order, in the combat against racism, xenophobia and all forms of discrimination, for the realization of cultural rights and respect for diversity.
