(31 August/2016) Cuba reiterates its commitment with a nuclear-weapon- free world, on the ocassion of the International Day against Nuclear Tests.

New York, 31 August 2016. During the UN session marking the observance of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, Cuba highlighted that the mere existence of nuclear weapons poses a serious threat on international peace and security and on the survival of the human species in the planet. It also defined as unjustifiable and unacceptable the current world’s increasing expenditures in the development and testing of nuclear weapons and less in the promotion of life and development. 

In her statement the delegate of Cuba, Lilianne Sánchez Rodríguez considered the total elimination and prohibition of nuclear weapons, as the only guarantee to avoid its use or threat of use by States or individuals, and called upon the momentum set by the Open-ended Working Group taking forward nuclear disarmament negotiations in Geneva, to initiate as soon as possible negotiations for a comprehensive convention on nuclear disarmament.

Likewise, the Cuban diplomat encouraged all States to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons next 26 September, and increase public awareness and knowledge on what these represent for humankind, as well as the need for their total elimination.

New York, 19 July 2016. Cuba supported today a true and profound reform of the Security Council, which turns it into an effective, transparent, representative, democratic body, in line with the evolution of international relations and the United Nations over the last 70 years, throughout further efforts in the search for effective formulas that ensure a true participation of the Member States in the Council´s works and decision-making.

In her statement, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silva Rodríguez Abascal, reiterated the importance of making changes in the Organ’s working methods to achieve broad-based consensus, increase the number of public meetings, improve the dialogue and interaction between the Council and all members of the United Nations, guarantee access of Non-Council members to subsidiary bodies, among others. Thus, she pointed out: “We hope to see a more representative, democratic, transparent and efficient Security Council, in which the views of all members are taken into consideration, as well as the different realities of today´s world”. (13 July/2016) “Cuba ratifies its commitment with the promotion of human rights for all peoples”.

New York, 13 July 2016. As part of the High Level Thematic Debate on Human Rights, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, today called upon eliminating poverty and hunger, providing access to high quality education and guaranteeing universal right to healthcare, in order to meet the demands of over 795 million people in the world who suffer from starvation, out of whom 780 million live in developing regions, of 774 million illiterate adults and 6 million children who die from preventable diseases every year.  Likewise, she called on the consideration of the just historical demands of the South peoples and the great majorities of the world in issues such as the effective fulfillment of the right to development, action to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance and ensuring respect for cultural diversity.

While highlighting the right to peace as a fundamental right for each human being and all peoples, as well as the adherence to international law and the Charter of the United Nations as irreplaceable prerequisites for the promotion and protection of human rights, she ratified in the name of Cuba, its unwavering commitment with the promotion and respect of human rights for all. (12 July/2016) “Cuba considers alarming the inaction of the Security Council in relation to the Palestinian cause”.

New York, 12 July 2016. Cuba highlighted today at the UN Security Council that this body is called upon to promote a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the conflicts in the Middle East, allowing to safeguard the territorial sovereignty, security and integrity of all the States of the region. In her statement, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, called on this body to fulfill its responsibility under the Charter in terms of peacekeeping and international security, and to make the necessary decisions to demand from Israel the immediate end of its occupation of the Palestinian territory and other Arab territories. Likewise, the Ambassador reiterated Cuba’s support to the Syrian people in its aspirations to live in peace and to determine its destiny, without external interference. 

While reaffirming our country’s full support for the Palestinian State to become a full member of the Organization and calling on the Security Council to pronounce itself and accept this application without further delay, she summoned the General Assembly to exercise all its powers to reach a decision. At the end of her statement, the Cuban diplomat stated:  “The peace, security, welfare and development deserved by all peoples, including the peoples of the Middle East, will depend on the decisive action of this Body, by virtue of the powers conferred upon by the Charter of the Organization.” (Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations)

(7 July/2016) “Cuba in the promotion of sustainable development of our peoples”.

New York, 7 July 2016. At the concluding session of the ECOSOC Dialogue on the longer-term positioning of the UN development system, the Cuban delegate Yilianne Sánchez Rodríguez, confirmed today in name of Cuba the call to improve the efficiency and role of the UN system and its specialized bodies  to favor development and the effective and coherent implementation of the 2030 Agenda, at the time she considered the incapacity to meet the particular priorities and realities of each and every one of our peoples, as the main challenge the system faces. The Cuban delegate highlighted that every action aimed at promoting sustainable development shall comprise full adherence to respect for national sovereignty, respond to the request of national governments and be aligned with its policies and development strategies. 

While stating Cuba’s support thereby, she noted: “With our limited resources, increased shortages and, under the basis of our experiences, ups and downs, we believe these are times to take advantage and improve what we already have”. (Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations)

(1 July/2016) “Cuba ratifies its full participation in the struggle against terrorism”.

1 July, 2016. At the United Nations General Assembly, Cuba decisively supported today the collective efforts of the Organization against terrorism and guaranteed its full participation in the struggle against such scourge. Within the framework of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy Review, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez, noted that the international community shall not accept that under the flag of an alleged counter-terrorism struggle, acts of aggression or interference in States’ internal affairs are committed, as well as, flagrant human right and international humanitarian law violations, such as tortures, kidnaps, illegal detentions, disappearances and extrajudicial executions. 

At the time he condemned the harmful practice of certain States of financing and promoting intolerance and hatred messages against other peoples, cultures or political systems through the Internet, radio or TV, in open transgression to the principles of the UN Charter and International Law, the Representative of Cuba made a call to overcome the root causes of terrorism, offer protection to its victims and to attain States’ fulfillment of international obligations without double standards, including the obligation to judge and extradite all terrorists, without any exception. (31 May/2016) “Cuba reiterates its firm commitment with colonial peoples’ struggle for their self-determination”.

Nicaragua, 31 May 2016. At the opening session of the Pacific Regional Seminar of the UN Committee on Decolonization, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, noted the priority the United Nations Organization shall continue offering to the decolonization cause, as well as, the importance of serious and respectful collaboration by Administering Powers with the UN Committee on Decolonization, so that it fulfills its mandate and relevant UN resolutions on the issue. 

When referring to Cuba’s commitment with the struggle against colonialism, the Cuban diplomat highlighted: “Cuba ratifies its steadfast support to the inalienable right of all peoples to self-determination and expects that the celebration of this Seminar, especially the respectful and constructive dialogue and exchange of viewpoints, constitutes a significant  step forward in the struggle of the peoples of non-autonomous territories to achieve their independence, sovereignty and free-determination”.
