Cuba participates in commemorative event in Geneva for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
Geneva, September 27, 2016: As part of worldwide activities to commemorate the "International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons", the Permanent Mission of Cuba participated in an event at the UN headquarters in Geneva, organized by various civil society organizations actively working for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
The event was attended by ambassadors and diplomats from various countries, representatives of civil society and was attended by the Director General of the Office of the United Nations in Geneva, Mr. Michael Moller.
The speakers stressed the importance of advancing international negotiations on nuclear disarmament and achieve concrete results. In this regard, they urged the international community to adopt a legally binding instrument prohibiting nuclear weapons with a view to their total elimination as a result of multilateral negotiations within the United Nations.
The call for the establishment of a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone in the Middle East was a priority identified in the event, as well as the recognition of the serious humanitarian consequences nuclear weapons mean for the existence of the human species.
The event, where the Ambassador of Cuba and diplomats from the Cuban Mission participated, demonstrated the importance of the various and numerous actions carried out within the framework of this International Day to raise awareness and a genuine commitment of the majority of nations and people with the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
