"Situation of human rights in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories"
Statement by the Permanent Representative of Cuba, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, in the General Debate on Agenda Item 7, entitled "Situation of human rights in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories" at the 33rd regular session of the Human Rights Council. Geneva, Switzerland, September 23, 2016.
Cuba fully aligns itself with the statement made by Venezuela on behalf of the NAM.
A few days ago the President of Cuba Raúl Castro, speaking precisely in the 17th NAM Summit held in Venezuela, said: “It is unacceptable that the Palestinian people are still victims of occupation and violence, and that the occupying power continues preventing the establishment of an independent Palestinian State with its capital in East Jerusalem." End of quote.
Therefore, Cuba reiterates its support for the existence of item 7 on the agenda of the Council and rejects the decision by some countries not to participate in discussions on this important topic.
The confiscation of Palestinian lands; the permanence of the Wall; the demographic changes in the population; the house demolitions, the excavations and the imposition of arbitrary and racist restrictions on movement throughout the occupied Palestinian territory, especially in and around East Jerusalem, must cease immediately.
The blockade of the Gaza Strip must be lifted and the arrival of humanitarian aid to the population of that territory should be allowed.
The genocide against the Palestinian people must end and those responsible and their accomplices have to account for their crimes. We are convinced that there is no military solution to the conflict. We reaffirm our commitment to a peaceful solution.
The situation in the Occupied Syrian Golan also remains a source of concern. The Israeli occupation continues to violate the human rights of Syrian citizens, in clear violation of its international obligations as an occupying power.
To conclude, Mr. President, Cuba reaffirms its unequivocal support for the cause of the Arab peoples against occupation, and the full exercise by the Palestinian people of their right to self-determination in an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital. We aim to reach peace without conditions, a just and lasting peace for all peoples of the Middle East, without any exception. We confirm that these are the premises to ensure the full enjoyment of human rights for all the inhabitants of the Middle East.
