Statement by the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, Ambassador Anayansi Rodriguez Camejo, at the interactive dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on Syria at the 33rd regular session of the Human Rights Council. Geneva, Switzerland, September 19, 2016.
Despite all the obstacles that have been put in the way of achieving a solution to the conflict in Syria, we continue to believe that efforts must be made to positively contribute to the goal of achieving peace and re-build a country full of culture and history that has managed to sustain itself, resisting the onslaught of extremism and external interference.
It is increasingly imperative to find a solution to the critical situation in Syria, which has faced a conflict that has lasted more than five years; paying a very high price in human and material losses and suffering of a large part of the population.
We hope that the recent agreement on a "sustainable" cessation of violence, facilitate negotiations for a political solution.
It is vital that the international community and mainly those external forces that in one way or another have contributed to the existence of extremist groups and a manipulated opposition, without an agenda and being divided, cease this support and devote resources and efforts to rebuild Syria.
The true interests of the Syrian people and its legitimate government have to be privileged including the exercise of their right to peace, self-determination and to life.
We renew our confidence that the Syrian people are able to resolve their differences by themselves and demand to stop foreign interference in their domestic affairs.
We reject any attempt to undermine the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. The role of the international community is assisting to safeguard peace and stability in Syria, not encourage actions that cause death, attacks on the innocent and insecurity.
We reaffirm the support for the search for a peaceful, just and negotiated solution to the current crisis.
