Note of the Permanent Mission of Cuba in Geneva for the return to Cuba one year ago of the Cuban Five.
NOTE OF THE PERMANENT MISSION OF CUBA IN GENEVA ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE RELEASE OF THE CUBAN FIVE ANTITERRORIST FIGHTERS.
Today, December 17, marks one year of the historic return to Cuba of three of the Cuban Five antiterrorist fighters Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero, who joined Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez on home soil, with their wives, mothers, children, relatives and the Cuban people.
The Five, who were unjustly imprisoned in the United States for over 15 years returned thanks to the giant mobilization of millions of honest people in the world who steadily demanded their release and, above all, thanks to their spirit of resistance.
The Permanent Mission of Cuba in Geneva wishes to take this opportunity to acknowledge the strong activism shown by the Switzerland-Cuba Friendship Association in this struggle, as well as other political, religious, cultural, legal and scientific figures of goodwill who, from Switzerland, joined this noble cause and today continue to defend the sovereign right of the Cuban people to be independent.
The return of the Five Heroes to their homeland is a victory for the resistance, perseverance and hope that has always remained alive in the hearts of all Cubans and thousands of people worldwide. The birth of Gema, daughter of the Hero Gerardo Hernandez, is a symbol of that hope.
It is a victory that was advanced by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz when, in 2002, said: "Our heroes must be freed. The enormous injustice committed against them will be known to the world. Our comrades, sooner rather than later, will return!
On this first anniversary, the Permanent Mission of Cuba in Geneva joins the immense joy of the Cuban people and reaffirms its deep conviction to continue struggling for the ideals defended by the Five.
