CUBA DENOUNCED THE US BLOCKADE AND THE UNILATERAL COERCIVE MEASURES IT IMPLIES, AT UNCTAD MEETING.

Geneva, October 6, 2016. At the Expert Meeting on Non-tariff Measures (NTMs) and Productivity celebrated at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Cuban delegation denounced the unilateral coercive measures as non-tariff barriers that have a negative and significant  impact on trade.

At the event, the Cuban delegate, Katina Pérez Estrada, explained that due to the regulations imposed by the US economic, trade and financial blockade against Cuba ome services have to face barriers like measures restricting entry of foreign providers, foreign exporters of manufactured goods, or simply the denial of access to markets. In this sense, Cuban products cannot access to U.S market due to unilateral coercive measures that conform the blockade.

Pérez Estrada presented concrete examples to demonstrate the extraterritorial impact of the blockade, such as that on September 2015, when the ASDA supermarket chain based in the UK and belonging to the Walmart Group of the U.S. received instructions to remove the sale of all Cuban products or their by products due to blockade regulations. In consequence, Hunters & Frankau, the exclusive distributor of Habanos S.A. in the UK, was seriously affected.

Finally, the Cuban delegate highlighted the importance to deal with this topic at UNCTAD, according to the mandate given by its Member States in ministerial conferences such as Accra, Doha and more recently Nairobi, July 2016, and also as part of the implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, which have decided to address  the issue of non-tariff measures, including unilateral coercive measures, where they may act as unnecessary trade barriers.
