The Human Rights Council creates a Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development.

PRESS RELEASE

The Human Rights Council creates a Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development.

Geneva, 29 September 2016. Following a proposal of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), chaired by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the 33rd regular session of the Human Rights Council adopted the resolution on the right to development under which a new Special Rapporteur on the subject was established.

At a time when all countries are committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the importance of this new Special Rapporteur is even more relevant. In this way the Council brings a new hope for millions of people around the world and to the goal of achieving an enabling international environment for development, in which all countries, without distinction or interference, may define their own models and policies according to their conditions and realities.

By adopting this important resolution, the NAM takes a further step towards the ultimate goal of its members: the drafting of a Convention on the Right to Development which open the way to its realization.
