Cultural Festival of Windsor, Ontario, carries out activity of solidarity with Cuba

With the support of the Cultural Festival of Windsor, Ontario, known as "MayWorks" and sponsored by the local Association of friendship with Cuba and Cubans residing, on May 6, 2012 an event in solidarity with the Caribbean nation took place in that city. Canadians and Cubans residing participated in a meeting on the update of the Cuban economic model, which began with a presentation on the subject by the consul-general of Cuba in Toronto, Jorge Soberon. Attendees enjoyed the screening of the film "Havanastation" and shared a dinner with Creole flavor.

Mayor of London, Ontario, receives Consul General of Cuba

On May 4, 2012, the Mayor of the city of London in the province of Ontario, Joe Fontana, received the Consul General of Cuba, Jorge Soberon, based in Toronto. The meeting allowed to update the status of relations between Cuba and Canada and the links between the city of London and Cuba, among other topics of interest to both parties. London is regarded as one of the ten most populated cities of Canada. The city prioritizes its services of education and medical care and is recognized for being home of the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College, institutions with international exchanges, including with senior Cuban studies centres. In addition, from its international airport Canadians travel directly to Varadero, Cuba. The visit allowed to see the sympathy of the Canadian people towards Cuba and assess the possibilities to further develop those relationships.

Cuban artist "Gélico" opens gallery in Toronto

As a contribution to the cultural presence of Cuba in Canada, at the end of April 2012 the art Gallery of Gélico or "Gelico Gallery" was opened in a central area of Toronto. The Cuban artist resident in the Canadian city, Ángel Fernández Díaz, known as "Gélico", thus achieved an old dream. Originally from the province of Villa Clara, “Gélico” presented his pictorial retrospective "Paradigms", which shows the creative work of the painter and caricaturist through different stages, styles and inspirations. Years ago, Gélico had created the cultural magazine "Cañasanta" in Canada. Representatives of the Association of Cubans living in Toronto "Juan Gualberto Gómez", the Consuls of Cuba in Toronto, Raul Delgado Concepción and Julio Pujol Torres, as well as members of local cultural institutions were present at the opening. The new institution becomes a centre in which Cuban culture and the links between Cuba and Canada are being promoted.

Mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, meets with Cuban General Consul in Toronto

On April 30, 2012, the Mayor of the city of Mississauga in the province of Ontario, Canada, Hazel McCallion, met with the Consul General of Cuba in Toronto, Jorge Soberon. The Mayor, 91 years old, has held that position since 1978, witnessing a multifaceted development of the city of Mississauga, whose population exceeds 700,000 residents today. McCallion has been recognized as a doctor "honoris causa" from the University of Toronto and an influential woman in English-speaking Canada. The Cuban Consul-General reported to the Mayor about the update of the Cuban economic model, the hostile policy of the United States against Cuba and on the global challenges facing the Caribbean nation. During the meeting, the development of relations between the peoples of Cuba and Canada was highlighted, whose greatest exponent is the visit of more than one million Canadian citizens to Cuba each year. The city of Mississauga will co-hosts of the 2015 Pan American Games to be held in Toronto.
