PRESS RELEASE

FREE THE CUBAN FIVE HEROES UNJUSTLY HELD IN U.S. PRISONS!

The 6th World Solidarity Campaign demanding the release of the Cuban five heroes will take place from September 12th until October 8th 2011 demanding the freedom of the five antiterrorist fighters.

On September 1998, five Cuban young men (Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez) were arrested in Miami by the FBI agents and kept in isolation cells for 17 months before their case was even brought before a court. Their mission in the United States was monitoring the activities of the groups and organizations responsible for terrorist activities against Cuba that murdered more that 3000 Cuban and wounded other thousands.

The US government never accused them of actual espionage, nor did it affirm that real acts of espionage had been carried out, and no classified document was confiscated but did all possible to enforce unruly sentences to all of them.

Yet unsatisfied the U.S. government rejected Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo’s habeas corpus petition which was filed on 25 April 2011. Washington wants the court in Miami, cradle of terrorists of Cuban origin, to declare the petition inadmissible, without holding a hearing to examine its merits, and without presenting the evidence in it. This is how the court responded to the last legal recourse of a human being sentenced to two life terms plus 15 years.

The arbitrary nature of the treatment of the petitioner is underscored by the fact that he has been repeatedly denied visits from his wife, Adriana Perez, his correspondence has been retained or restricted, including material of a legal nature related with his case.

As for Antonio, evidence has gradually come out as to exactly the extent to which the united states tried to prejudice the five during their trial there is also evidence of the payment of a quarter of a million dollars from the U.S. government to media sources in Miami, who were instructed to demonize the defendants; therefore swaying public opinion and helping to achieve a guilty sentence
The documents that have been filed for Gerardo and Antonio also apply to René, Ramón and Fernando, who have not yet had the opportunity to request habeas corpus relief.
Despite the fact that the defence team for both men presented proof of their innocence, Washington asked for both appeals for to be dismissed in a similar manner.

The legal team for Gerardo has filed a comprehensive reply as well as additional memoranda and affidavits in response to the (us) government’s opposition to his petition for habeas corpus relief.

The transnational media dictatorship is probably currently the most efficient instrument in imperialism's political hegemony. It largely dominates information on a global scale, determining what people are allowed to know and blocking whatever it wishes to conceal, with an iron fist.

Such iron-clad censorship is not accidental. Part of Gerardo’s appeal is based precisely on the concealment of evidence and the perverse function of the so-called information media.

The battle for the freedom of our five compatriots can only be won if media silence is broken and the weight of public opinion influences the case.
