Statement by H.E. Mr. Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios. 15 may 2016
Mauthausen is one of those historical sites whose celebrity is paradoxical.
It has transcended time by horror, hatred and atrocities that were committed within those walls.
Sadness and pain reigns here. It is an imperishable example of holocaust, genocide factory, a symbol of evil and a sinister complex of buildings erected under the dark slogan of "Eternal Night and Fog".
It is a place that should have never existed. It is difficult to accept that it was conceived by other human beings. Mauthausen was established as a “Level III" category camp, the strictest of the concentration camps of the Nazi regime. Here, once prisoners were in, they were never out. The forced labor and vile exploitation extermination of prisoners was its main objective.
