In July and August, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra joined in with their own celebrations in each state. From one end to the other of this vast southern territory, Fidel’s 90th birthday was the motive for numerous activities with diverse representations on the life and Works of the Head of the Cuban Revolution.
One of these activities was the Sydney ACFS together with other Solidarity Committees and Friends of Cuba, who organised a very special commemoration in the Greek Communist Party Club, celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the Moncada Attack, together with Fidel’s 90th birthday. Lia Weitzel, the President of the Sydney Branch (ACFS) organised the event and spoke of the great importance the both dates mean to the Cuban people and friends of Cuba. Other speakers on the night spoke of the advancements Cuba has made over the years in the areas of Health and Education and also the fact that Cuba provides assistance in these areas to many other countries. After Fidel’s closing speech at the 7th Communist Party Congress was read, a number of short documentaries about Fidel were shown. The activity raised funds for a number of social projects in Cuba (through ICAP). The music group Papalote, entertained all by playing some very famous Cuban songs.
Similar activities took place in South Australia. At these events there was mention of the successes of the educational programme “Yes I can” (“Yo si puedo”) in numerous Aboriginal communities in Australia.
In the Capital, Canberra, the Cuban Ambassador, Jose Manuel Galego Montano made reference to moments in the life of Fidel, believing him to be an eternal fighter and example for all revolutionaries throughout the world.
Soon you will see photos taken by Roberto Chile in Perth, where a number of documentaries will also be shown. The activities will continue throughout 2017
Fidel – also present in Australia!
